					Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, Discovery Channel's Mythbusters came to MIT last night and gave a talk about their show, personal lives, and interests. It was great. Their personalities match those displayed on the air, and they're very funny. We even got to see some footage that was never displayed on the show.

I did quite a bit of noise removal on this one. It doesn't look great at full size.

					I can't believe that I saw a Bugatti Veyron in Europe this summer. Before I left, I remember telling my friends that it would be the most incredible experience to see one. Maybe that's why I love Berlin so much. The Veyron is the most incredible car of all time. Over 1000 bhp. Let a Ferrari get to 100mph and the Veyron will beat it to 200. This photo is from a while back in March, when I first tried some studio shots. I setup a backdrop and got a few 300W lights and staged some shots. This one came out really well. On top of that, Veuve Clicquot is my favorite champagne.

					The more I look at the photos I took in Albany, NY, the more I realize that it's really deserted. We went on a Sunday and the ladies at Subway tried to convince us that it was much busier on weekdays, but after looking at how many buildings were boarded up, I seem to doubt it. Also, some of the architecture suggests a revival in the 60s/70s that didn't do too much.

					Since I took quite a few photos during my trip, I'll probably be posting many from Niagara Falls. To start, here's a pretty busy photo. It shows water crashing down onto the rocks at the bottom of Amera's Falls. There is ice on top of the rocks, which seems to be formed in layers, I assume since the mist freezes in layers on the rocks. The water is over to the right. I did a little dodging and burning for this one, and I think it turned out well, let me know.

					Despite staying up very late last night, and searing cold in Boston, I took lots of photos today. I've decided that I'm going to process them differently than I normally do, in part to try different things, and to work on finding an individual style. As most of my stuff has been very saturated and bright, in the past, these next photos will be less so, including this photo of some valves that I saw on campus. Let me know what you think

					Yeah, I know this thing isn't actually a smokestack, but after a comment on yesterday's post, I quite like the idea of calling it a smokestack since it seems to have no purpose unless Mr. Gehry wants to enlighten us. Anyway, this is a shot of his Stata Center, part of it on the third floor outdoor area. I went to New York this weekend, but it was raining most of the time, so I didn't take any photos, except this one. It's pretty abstract, and taken from the bus on the way home, out the window, of the city as we passed by on the George Washington Bridge. The ISO was set really high, something I should have checked, but after a noise filter, I'm pretty happy with the result. The blue, white, and red lights are the Empire State Building, and the Chrysler building is over on the right, it kind of looks like a spring.

					Today after I finished all my exams, I headed over to Boston's Newberry street to do some Christmas shopping, and I ran into
			this guy, black santa. The conversation went something like this:<br>
			<table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="3">
				<tr>
					<td>Me:</td>
					<td>"I don't see very many black santas"</td>
				</tr>
				<tr>
					<td>BS:</td>
					<td>(throws his arms in the air) "Man, that's what I've been saying to people."</td>
				</tr>
				<tr>
					<td>Me:</td>
					<td>"Can I take a photo of you?"</td>
				</tr>
				<tr>
					<td>BS:</td>
					<td>"Gotta get the word out about black santa."</td>
				</tr>
				<tr>
					<td>Me:</td>
					<td>(take some photos)</td>
				</tr>
				<tr>
					<td>BS:</td>
					<td>"Man, drop a twenty into my bucket man."</td>
				</tr>
				<tr>
					<td>Me:</td>
					<td>"I'm just a college student, I haven't got that kind of money"</td>
				</tr>
				<tr>
					<td>BS:</td>
					<td>"Alright, alright, I see, I see ... pause ... just drop a couple of fives then."</td>
				</tr>
			</table>
			I give him a few dollars and wish him a Merry Christmas.<br>
			As for the photo, it's basically a standard night photo with a flash, and edited to be black and white and red.

					No thanks to Jessica (aka Jess), I sat out in the cold tonight to take this photo of the city against the frozen water in the Charles River. It was exposed for 6 seconds at f/3.5 at a focal length of 18mm (29mm equiv.) with ISO 100. The ice really draws out the reflections of the building providing a great effect.

					Yesterday I attempted to construct a macro lens out of other old lenses, and the results are above. I'm pleased with my makeshift lens and look forward to making it more solid and increasing it's focal length. I used a flash at an exposure speed of 1/160sec at f/11. The content is from a print of a Corinthian column etching I have on my wall.

					Took this in Northern Ireland, at the Old Bushmills Distillery, a favorite family day trip location during summer vacations when I was young. I was lucky to go back this year and enjoy some of the finest whiskey in the world. Taken with my Sony point-and-shoot camera.

			<title>Winter Sunset</title>

					The other day I looked up from my studies to notice a rich red glow filling my room. I peeked out the window, then threw on some pants as I rushed outside to capture some pictures of this spectacular sunset (I wish I'd taken gloves). Atop my tripod, the exposure was 1/13sec using my telephoto lens at 180mm (288mm equiv) and an f-stop of 5. The photo was slightly underexposed to get more of a silhouette effect, and there is minimal cropping.

					This photo was one of the first I took with my new camera, the Canon Digital Rebel XT. It was my first attempt at a still life with the new camera, and I'm very happy with the depth of field and the wide angle of the lens. The image has been warmed up a little to make the scene reminiscent of the beer. This was a 1.3sec exposure, at 18mm (29mm equiv.) F/4, with ISO 100. I mounted the camera on a tripod and locked up the mirror while I did a timed exposure (another feature of my new camera I was eager to try).

					So I decided to start a photo blog, and I'll post photos here periodically. For now, they'll stay around for a while, but later, I'll post every day. Eventually I'll make the site interactive so that it's more like an actual blog.

I photographed this silhouette of a rock formation at Olympic National Park in Washington State with my point and shoot camera. We drove since early morning, and this was the final place we stopped; a brilliant idea since the beach and surroundings were beautiful.
